"When the body gets working appropriately, the force of gravity can flow through. Then, spontaneously, the body heals itself."
~Dr. Ida P Rolf
The hallmark of Rolfing Structural Integration is a standardized "recipe" known as the Ten-Series, the goal of which is to systematically balance and optimize both the structure (shape) and function (movement) of the entire body over the course of ten Rolfing sessions.
Each session focuses on freeing restrictions or holdings trapped in a particular region of the body. A practitioner also maintains a holistic view of the client's entire system during each session, thus ensuring the transformational process evolves in a comfortable and harmonious way.
The Ten-Series can be divided into three distinct units:
Sessions 1-3:
Called the "sleeve" sessions, sessions 1-3 strive to loosen and balance surface layers of connective tissue.
Specifically, the first session is devoted to enhancing the quality of breath with work on the arms, ribcage and diaphragm. Opening is also started along the upper leg, hamstrings, neck and spine.
The second session helps give the body a stable foundation by balancing the foot and muscles of the lower leg.
The third session typically involves a "side view" for an understanding of how the head, shoulder girdle, and hips are positionaly related to one another when standing under the influence of gravity. Then, the body is addressed within the context of this new vision.
Sessions 4-7:
Sessions 4-7 are referred to as "core" sessions and examine terrain found between the bottom of the pelvis and top of the head. The idea of core also includes the deep tissue of the legs for its role in support.
Session four begins this journey, its territory extends from the inside arch of the foot and up the leg, to the bottom of the pelvis.
The fifth session is concerned with balancing surface and deep abdominal muscles to the curve of the back.
Session six seeks to enlist more support and moment from the legs, pelvis and lower back, while the seventh session turns its sole attention to the neck and head.
Session 8-10:
"Integration" is emphasized throughout the remaining three sessions, as sessions 8-10 provide an opportunity for the practitioner to blend previously established advancements, and ones yet to be made, into the body in a way that encourages smooth movement and natural coordination.
During sessions eight and nine, the practitioner determines how best to achieve this integration, as the protocol is unique for each individual.
The tenth and final session is also one of integration, but more importantly, serves to inspire a sense of order and balance. Once completed, the wisdom of the Rolfing Ten Series will drive and support the body with health for years to come
The Ten Series
SESSION 1
INSPIRATION-
Session one begins the process of shifting both the shoulder and pelvic girdles into horizontal alignment at a superficial level. We begin to open the thoracic area and rib cage, so it may expand with the breath.
SESSION 2
GROUNDING
Session two brings more balance and stability to the lower portion of the body creating a solid base for the entire body. We begin to find balance between the feet and ankles. We also begin to ease rotation and support flexibility in the back.
SESSION 3
BOUNDARIES
Session three focuses on untwisting the body’s entire outer layer or “jumpsuit” while continuing to balance and re-position the shoulder and pelvic girdles.
SESSION 4
CONTROL AND SURRENDER
Session four begins the process of the balance of movement to transfer through the intrinsic layers or core of the body. Specifically, this session focuses on the structural balance and transfer of motion through the inner legs, pelvic floor, and back
SESSION 5
STABILITY
Session five begins releasing the deep holding patterns within the intrinsic layers of the pelvis, abdomen and thorax. We increase mobility of the respiratory diaphragm and movement through the inner torso and pelvis.
SESSION 6
HOLDING BACK
Session six eases remaining imbalances or rotations between the legs, pelvis, sacrum and spine. As these basic structural relationships change, long-term movement patterns and spinal imbalances can be addressed.
SESSION 7
CONNECTING HEAD & HEART
Session seven is the culmination of the "core sessions". We give attention to aligning the head and neck to the body’s vertical center, the mobility of the cranial bones and the balance between the cranial base and vault.
SESSIONS 8 & 9
FINDING FLOW BETWEEN INNER AND OUTER WORLD
Sessions eight and nine focus on the balanced relationship between the body’s extrinsic and intrinsic layers. The job of balancing the entire body while supporting the integrity of motion through the core is divided equally between these two sessions.
SESSION 10
COMPLETION AND NEW BEGINNINGS
The last session completes the overall balancing of the body’s inner and outer layers, the "final fitting". Specific attention is given to aligning and creating balance between the horizontal planes of the body in relationship to the core.
Sessions 1-3 focus on mobilizing and re-positioning the body's outer layers or jumpsuit.
Sessions 4-7 focus on the ability to transfer movement through the body's deep layers or core.
Sessions 8-10 focus on balancing the body's outer jumpsuit and inner core
Structural integrators us sustained pressure to open up chronic holding patterns in the connective tissue wrappings surrounding each muscle. You might feel warmth, tingling and sometimes momentary discomfort from the work.
Rolfers use pressure and stretching to change and release the connective tissue. Often people will remember or "feel" an old injury or pain as it is released and that is followed by the feeling of relief and well-being as flexibility and balance is restored to those areas.,
What to wear?
Sessions are typically done with the client in their underwear or gym shorts. For women, a sports bra, two piece bathing suit or tank top is suitable. The session can also be done through clothing if that is the comfort-level of the client. If you would like to wear something different, we can discuss comfortable options before your first sessions.
