Self care for daily health

Our Occupational Therapists specialize in partnering up with you to come up with realistic and helpful solutions for accomplishing life’s valued and meaningful activities, hobbies and responsibilities - also known as occupations.

The path to health and well-being is intricately linked to participating in daily occupations. Occupational therapy focuses on enabling clients to maximize their capacity to participate in life activities that are important and meaningful to them, to promote overall health and wellness. Occupational therapy practitioners facilitate clients’ abilities to adapt and organize their daily occupations or activities related to self-care, , work, and/ or leisure into daily routines to prevent and minimize dysfunction, promote and develop a healthy lifestyle, and facilitate adaptation and recovery from injury, disease, or developmental challenges. Occupational therapy practitioners understand the complex and dynamic interactions between people, their environments, and the activities they need to accomplish in their daily lives, and how these interactions affect health and wellness

Benefits of Occupational Therapy

Illness, Injury and disabilities can result in disruption of many if not all activities of daily living and instrumental activities of daily living. Occupational therapy professionals receive a strong educational component in psychosocial development and pathology. This provides the basis for understanding the impact of dysfunction on key daily activities and roles. Course work in mental health gives occupational therapists the skills to evaluate clients’ psychosocial and emotional needs, modify the treatment approach to facilitate compliance with the rehabilitation program, and promote the best outcome possible. Because of the holistic, client centered approach of occupational therapy, clients are met at their current level of function. Through activity analysis, the occupational therapist is able to address each client’s priorities, along with his or her pathologies, with activity modifications and compensatory techniques to facilitate performing at his or her greatest level of independence from the start, and at every step of the rehabilitation process.

Occupational therapy assessments and evaluations reflect a client-centered, comprehensive approach. They include not only musculoskeletal (e.g., muscle strength, range of motion); sensory; cognitive or perceptual (if indicated); and vascular, skin, or connective tissue assessment, but also relevant medical, vocational, and/or avocational history. As part of the evaluation process,

Occupational Therapists are trained to help you determine what and how to get what you need! Live life on your own terms and live life to the fullest!

Meet our Occupational Therapists:

Kelly Ashe, MS, OTR/L, LMT

Kelly graduated from the Center for Natural Wellness School of Massage Therapy in 2009, and earned a Master’s degree in Occupational Therapy from Utica College in her home state of Central New York, in 2019. Kelly is a true believer in the power of healing touch, and its ability to restore a sense of well-being, and quality of life. She brings ten years of practice in Swedish, deep tissue, hot stone, and Shiatsu massage to her clients. While on the table, clients will experience a blend of Myofascial Release techniques, passive and active stretches, and Trigger Point therapy to rejuvenate tissue, encourage circulation, and improve range of motion. Because Kelly believes in the empowerment of each client to continue their healing off the table, self-care, stretching and strengthening recommendations are a valued aspect of her treatments. She invites each client to learn more about their bodies, and how to prolong the benefits of their massage. Whether it's targeted work to relieve pain from injuries or heal after surgery, or a tranquil, fluid massage to encourage deep relaxation, Kelly aims to bring the mind and body into balance, and wants her clients to feel heard and satisfied. Kelly is elated to join an exceptional team of specialists in massage therapy at Ka lani.

Virginia Virnelli, MS OTR/L, LMT

Virginia has been with Ka lani since January of 2017. As a massage therapist she specializes in deep tissue and trigger point therapy. She is especially passionate about pain and injury management. Virginia completed her Masters degree in Occupational Therapy in 2018 and has been utilizing her multidisciplinary approach to better the outcomes of her clients. She utilizes her knowledge of anatomy to complete deep tissue techniques and targeted trigger point therapy to reduce muscle tension and improve range of motion.

Virginia works with each client to uncover ways to create adjustments during every day activities relevant to them. This is done to help elongate the effects of the massage. This includes postural changes that can help to combat tension caused by repetitive activities, prolong holding patterns, poor posture, etc. Education for ergonomics and corrective posture are often great ways to create lasting change leading to improved pain management and injury prevention.

Sunday  Temporarily Closed

****We have  changed our hours a bit.  We are now closed on Sunday's (may be temporary) and running only one shift on Saturday's (alternating morning and evening shifts) and that is temporary. We made this decision for two reasons. Short on staff and to make better schedules for our employee's. We are hoping in the future to hire weekend staff that the hours work for.  We are always looking to make positive changes, that we will post and send to our clients by email. If you ever have any questions, give us a call at 1-603-380-7174
